Battle Royale: Me vs Spring!

I spent the weekend battling slugs, spider mites, ants, pollen, squirrels, rabbits and whatever else Mother Nature decided to throw my way. The fight is ON!! It's SOOO ON!!! OMG.... I just noticed that I've been bitten by a mosquito! Grrrrr.... I definitely have a love/hate relationship with Spring. I planted lupines out front and noticed that the seedlings were getting chewed up by slugs. Ants are EVERYWHERE! We have rabbits who apparently live across the street but love to hang out in our backyard at night- I think they know something. And the squirrels are digging up my yard! 'sigh'

This weekend, we were supposed to cut the grass (weeds really) and it rained all weekend. So now, the weeds and crab grass have overgrown (glad I don't have to cut the grass! :-))  But I did have a few happy moments this weekend....

My seedlings are doing really well... except the impatiens.  Can't win them all. This morning, I dumped the rest of the impatiens seeds in the front bed- probably when I got bit by the stupid mosquito.

I started hardening off my kale, collards, and my three surviving chamomile.  I also planted lettuce, arugula, daikon radish, dill, cilantro, and bunching onion seeds in the raised bed Friday, and planted marigolds in between thunderstorms yesterday. That was fun.

I re-potted my napa cabbage, which I honestly did not think would grow.  All of the seeds were viable and they grew unbelievably fast! I may have mutant cabbages.

One of my mint plants has gone crazy but of course, it's the one that the spider mites love. :-(

We've discovered the miracles of kefir and have started making our own!!

Last night, I made the dough for Japanese milk bread and allowed the dough to rise the second time in the fridge. I pulled it out this morning and allowed the dough to warm up for an hour or so before popping them in the oven.  I have to say, I think the SLOW refrigerated second rise made the bread much softer and fluffier.

Made for a delicious Sunday breakfast! Sucks the weekend is over. Booooooo.
